MEDICINAL PLANT CULTIVATION

As the raw materials for traditional herbal medicine industries that produce traditional herbal medicine, the medicinal plants face a competition with the materials used for medicine/synthetic chemical compound and active compound (bio-active materials) that are used by pharmaceutical industries. However, the tendency of the community to consume traditional herbal medicine and the trend of the modern community to find alternative medication by going back to nature opens up prospective market opportunities for medicinal plants. The trend to go back to nature is driven by the side effect resulting from synthetic medicine and antibiotics as well as the growing view that consuming natural products is relatively safer than consuming synthetic ones. According to Corinthian Infopharma Corpora-CIC (2000) the consumption of traditional herbal medicine increased by 5.4% on average per annum. This opportunity is getting wider as the government outlines policies in developing traditional herbal medicine of Indonesia into fito-pharmaceutical industries.
