India is one of the more popular countries when it comes to herbal medicine. They’ve been practicing this for many generations and they continue to master the skill. After thousands of years, the ancient technique of herbal medicines in India is used to treat a great number of illnesses. In fact, their herbal medicines can even cure lethal diseases that prove to be difficult to treat even for the modern form of western medicines.
This form of treatment is called Ayurveda. It originated back in the prevedic period about 5,000 B.C. In 1,000 B.C, the Charak Samhita & Sushruta Samhita of Ayurveda was documented. The term Ayurveda itself literally means the science of life so it basically studies the life of our planet, of humans and even of animals.
Ayurveda itself is not only about herbal medicine rather it became a way of life. The lifestyle has to be healthy living throughout the life of the person. When illnesses arise, that’s when they use herbal medicines to combat the illness. Ayurveda is a system of caring for the human life not only to combat diseases but also to prevent them.
In Ayurveda, there are different specialties that they call as the Ashtanga Ayurveda. For each of these specialties, they focus on that type of Ayurveda similar to our doctors who also have specializations. For example, for internal medicine the Ayurvedic equivalent is Kaya Chikitisa. For Pediatrics is Kaumar Bhritya, Surgery is Shalya, Psychiatry is Bhoot Vidya. The modern and ancient techniques focus on the equivalent specialties but the techniques are different. The ancient study of Ayurveda is really a wonderful thing. It is the science of life that proves that we are all connected to each other and that we are connected to the Earth and the Earth is connected to the universe and we are all part of the cosmic Universe. Our mind is connected to the mind of the universe and our universe is just a different form of ourselves and the atoms that makes up the human body. Ayurveda takes its healing from getting in touch with the reality that we can heal ourselves while at the same time healing the universe.
It is believed that Ayurveda had been practiced for thousands of years and had been handed down from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, most of the ancient technique had been lost. In the modern age where the Western medicine is becoming widely used, India still practices Ayurveda and the majority of the people of India still get treated for their ailments using Ayurveda. The majority of the population of India still lives in very rural areas and modern medicines are scarce but the ancient Ayurveda and the herbal medicines are easily obtained by the locals.
Now, Ayurveda is not only practiced in India. It spreads on other countries too who are seeking a more natural method of treatment. Ayurveda is not just a treatment of the body but also of the mind and soul
